The Personal Auto policy (PAP) covers accidents and losses in any U.S. state, territory or possession, and Puerto Rico and Canada. The liability limits under the PAP may actually change as an insured crosses state lines or enters Canada, in order to meet financial responsibility or compulsory insurance laws requiring certain minimum limits and coverages for automobiles operated in that jurisdiction.
It’s a different story, however, when traveling to Mexico. The PAP does not cover accidents in Mexico beyond a limited distance from border.
For short trips into Mexico you can purchase temporary Mexico Trip insurance. A person involved in an accident in Mexico can be arrested without proof of liability provided by a Mexican insurance company. Therefore, U.S. citizens traveling in Mexico should always purchase protection from a Mexican insurance company. These special tourist policies provide liability, medical payments, and physical damage coverage for a specified number of days. It is recommended to purchase a few extra days’ coverage in case your return is delayed.
Contact our agency for a review of your policies before you go on vacation. This is an excellent time to consider purchasing higher limits and broader coverage we’ve been telling you about.
